Tour Description

Not far from your ship and next to the Passenger Terminal your attention will be immediately riveted by the cruiser “Kutuzov” anchored for good in this water and reminding of the heroic events of the Russian Navy. You will have an exclusive opportunity to get up the cruiser and explore its main deck with numerous cannons and antiaircraft guns.
Novorossiysk, originally the Turkish Navy base Sudjuk-Kale, was considerably fortified in 1838 by outstanding Russian commanders Raevsky, Lazarev and Serebryakov as a Navy outpost of the Russian Army. The port suffered a lot during Crimean war being destroyed by Anglo-French squadron and it was practically totally ruined in the WW2. In autumn 1942 Nazis occupied the city and launched the attack towards Tsemesskaya bay.

Defensive firing stand was taken on the eastern section of the city, now known as legendary Malaya Zemlya (“Land Minor”). For 225 days lasted the heroic defense of this territory to block up the outlet to the Caucasus for the Nazi troops. The city completely ruined, was built anew in the post war years. Today the Memorial Complex of Malaya Zemlya consists of the Stele with the inscription memorizing those tragic and heroic events, the War Museum, designed in the shape of the cruiser rostrum and exhibiting plagues with the names of the heroes and a section of conventional armaments of the WW2. From this vast territory of the former Russian defensive position you may view the panorama of Tsemesskaya bay, modern port and the port facilities.
In city downtown you will visit the Square of Heroes sacred for local people and for everyone of its guests. Today it is the memorial site with inscriptions on granite tombstones and eternal fire, dedicated to all heroes of the WW2.
